While Bastrop certainly has some gifted homegrown musicians, a local resident who is a musician and producer prominent in Texas music wants to take Bastrop a step further — by pairing local acts with some of the state’s best known performers. Freddy Fletcher, a nephew of Willie Nelson and a founder and partner in Austin venue ACL Live and recording studio Arlyn, is kicking off a monthly music series at Viejo’s Tacos Y Tequila on Main Street on Friday, March 3.

Ninety-four new single-family homes were approved for construction in Bastrop in 2016 — setting a five-year high — and officials say the city is on pace to meet or exceed last year’s housing production.

“We had several new site plans come through that we’re either reviewing or under construction or in the approved phase but they haven’t actually started,” Bastrop Director of Planning and Engineering Wesley Brandon said.

The executive director of the Bastrop Economic Development Corp. recently received the professional designation of Certified Economic Developer after passing a two-day qualifying examination.

The International Economic Development Council, the largest organization serving economic developers, conferred the industry certification on Shawn Kirkpatrick Dec. 4.

The Bastrop Economic Development Corp. is weighing a host of changes to its bylaws, including one that could limit the number of City Council members allowed to serve on its board.

The proposed change is in response to repeated concerns voiced by board members, city officials and residents who have said the council has too much influence in the organization, which lead the corporation to decide in February to take a comprehensive look at its governing document.

Bastrop City Manager Mike Talbot announced Wednesday he will resign, saying the City Council has overstepped its boundaries and infiltrated day-to-day management of the city, effectively handicapping him from doing his job.

“Over the past year the gradual erosion of the home rule charter’s segregation of responsibilities between the council and the manager … has culminated in a level of mental and physical stress that is seriously affecting my health and well-being,” Talbot said in his resignation letter... Read More
