Bastrop was named one of six “Great Places in Texas” in 2019 for its downtown neighborhood by the state chapter of the American Planning Association.

Communities included in the Great Places in Texas list exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value, the Texas chapter of the APA said in its announcement Monday.

A construction milestone was celebrated Monday for the Ascension Seton Bastrop Hospital after the last structural beam was placed on the future 40,000-square-foot medical center.

The Beck Group, the collaborative team helping design and build the hospital, held a ceremony Monday to celebrate the hospital’s “topping out,” or placement of the last structural beam.

The Bastrop Economic Development Corporation helped attract 107 jobs in 2018, the corporation’s executive director told the Advertiser.

The BEDC helped advance six projects that brought or will bring new jobs to Bastrop, BEDC Executive Director Mike Kamerlander said, such as by funding a road extension to serve as an access point to a neighborhood hospital or by helping the businesses navigate through the city’s permitting process.

The city of Bastrop has filled out its open development services positions with the hiring of a planning and zoning director and a building official.

The hirings follow Bastrop City Manager Lynda Humble’s decision to bring Jerry Palady permanently on board as the city’s director of engineering and development after having served in an interim basis since March.

The Bastrop City Council on Sept. 11 approved an exemption to its existing development moratorium to allow the Planning Department to review building plans and possibly issue a building permit for a HomeGoods at the Burleson Crossing shopping center.

The HomeGoods, a discount home furnishing store, is proposed to go up at an empty pad site between Academy and Ulta.

City will begin construction and get reimbursed by state

Former Bastrop Mayor Ken Kesselus remembers the days when Texas 21 wasn’t a highly trafficked thoroughfare, and kids would bike along the roadway to swim at the Bastrop State Park pool.

It was the late 1950s and 1960s in Bastrop, before the highway department built Texas 71 on the city’s southern edge. The pool at the state park was the community’s only public pool.

The Bastrop Economic Development Corp. and Visit Bastrop, a destination marketing nonprofit dedicated to promoting tourism in the city, have hired new executive directors.

The economic development group hired Mike Kamerlander to lead the organization and its mission to advance the investment, development, growth and relocation of companies to the area. Kamerlander’s first day on the job will be Sept. 17.
