Bastrop-area entrepreneurs received tips for starting up and maintaining businesses during the Small Business Workshops and Luncheon held on May 1 at the Bastrop Convention and Exhibit Center.

The event, part of the national celebration of Small Business Week, was hosted by the Bastrop Economic Development Corporation and the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce. It featured a panel of five officers from lending and community development institutions and two experts on business start-up and maintenance.

Bastrop students say the Youth Career Day held April 13 at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Performing Arts Center provided them a strong guiding light toward their potential career paths.

Students from Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School and the Colorado River Collegiate Academy heard from a panel of local business and public safety professionals, plus a keynote speech from the Austin tech community.

Bastrop is the 11th-fastest-growing county in Texas, according to U.S. Census data measuring growth from 2015 to 2016.

In that year, Bastrop County grew by 3.15 percent, reaching an estimated population of 82,733 in 2016.

“Our growth is expected, since we are next door to perhaps the No. 1 economy in the nation,” Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape said. “Jobs are available and our cost of living is relatively low.”
