Making connections: Bastrop EDC plans walkable trail through downtown

A network of sidewalks might soon encircle downtown Bastrop as part of a plan by the Bastrop Economic Development Corp. to make the city more pedestrian friendly.

The downtown trail route was proposed at the corporation’s board meeting on May 15.

The trail would stretch east to west along Texas 71 from Loop 150 to Perkins Street, travel north up Water and Main streets and connect back to Loop 150 to curve west toward Texas 71. The BEDC has stood behind the project over the past year, saying it will link north and south and east and west Bastrop and make it easier for people to walk or bike around town.

“It solves so many connectivity issues,” BEDC Executive Director Shawn Kirkpatrick said. “It connects east and west of the Colorado River, and north and south of Hwy 71, creating a destination downtown trail system for Bastrop.”

“It will do a lot of good things for the community.”
