Census data: Bastrop grew by 14 percent in five years

Bastrop’s population grew by nearly 14 percent from 2010-2015, topping 8,200 residents in July 2015, according to recently released U.S. Census Bureau data.

Bastrop’s population reached 8,231 last July, according to the federal agency’s latest estimates. The city’s population grew by 13.73 percent since 2010, making it the fastest-growing city in the county during those five years. Smithville and Elgin grew by 7.24 and 10.92 percent, respectively, during the same reporting period.

“I’m not surprised,” said Bastrop Mayor Ken Kesselus. “We’re lucky at this point to have had that level of growth – 14 percent – over a half-decade. We’ve managed and we’ll continue to manage.”

But managing growth and tackling infrastructure needs won’t be easy, Kesselus said.

“We’re always going to have streets that need to be repaired, and needs are always going to exists, but we do the best we can,” he said.
