Bastrop makes top 5 in running for reality show, $500,000 investment

Bastrop was named a top 5 finalist Tuesday morning in the nationwide competition to be featured in reality show “Small Business Revolution - Main Street” and winning up to $500,000 to revitalize its downtown.

Now in its third season, Deluxe Corporation, a small business marketing and financial services firm, is searching for a city to feature on the show and invest up to $500,000 in small businesses downtown.

“Bastrop is a town of 8,500. To win, we need more than one million votes,” Mayor Connie Schroeder said. “We have been humbled by the far-reaching support we’ve received from our fellow Texans and ask all Texans to vote for Bastrop, and our state, to bring this award home.”

Bastrop is the only Texas city to make the cut. It was chosen as a top 20 finalist in November after Deluxe Corporation read through 10,000 nominations and reached out to hundreds of communities to learn more about them. On Dec. 12, the corporation narrowed the field to 10.

The competition now is in its last phase — the public vote. The city that receives the most votes will win the competition.

Anyone with an email address can vote once per day from Feb. 13-20 on smallbusinessrevolution.org. City officials are asking every Texas to vote for Bastrop and invite their family and friends to do the same.

“We have a chance to show the nation what makes Texas the best place in the country for small businesses,” Hospitality and Downtown Director Sarah O’Brien said. “It’s our people, our passion and our support of one another that makes us so special.”

State officials from Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar to Sen. Kirk Watson and Rep. John Cyrier have joined the call to bring the show to Bastrop by saying on social media why they love the city using the hashtag #MyBastrop.
