Political newcomer Connie Schroeder defeated 27-year veteran Council Member Willie DeLaRosa for Bastrop’s highest elected office, becoming the first woman to hold the post, according to the unofficial results.

“I am thrilled and honored to be the next mayor of Bastrop,” Schroeder said. “But what I’m most thrilled about is to see the huge participation in the election process. I appreciate Council Member Willie DeLaRosa’s service to our community.”

Schroeder enjoyed a strong lead after the early vote and cruised to victory after Election Day totals were tallied.

Schroeder received 609 votes (59.01 percent), compared with DeLaRosa’s 423 votes (40.99 percent).

Schroeder has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the past six years and oversaw the implementation of the city’s comprehensive plan. She is a retired civil engineer.
