Bastrop EDC awarded workforce excellence award for labor leadership

Bastrop’s Economic Development Corp. on Thursday received the 2017 Workforce Excellence Award from the Texas Economic Development Council for its contributions to workforce development.

The award celebrated the corporation’s 2016 Bastrop Youth Career Day, now an annual program in the city that helps bridge the gap between students in high school and sustainable employment after graduation.

The youth career day program exposes students to career opportunities available in Bastrop, helps satisfy the state’s educational mandates and community needs for workforce-ready graduates by connecting students with industries, supports students’ progress along state-prescribed career pathways based on aptitudes and interests, and enables employers to identify and recruit work- and trade-related employees from within Bastrop County, according to event organizers.

“Our team is truly honored to receive this statewide recognition for our work in linking education and workforce development, because bringing meaningful employment to our citizens requires a diverse, educated workforce,” Bastrop Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Shawn Kirkpatrick said. “These students are our future citizens, employers and leaders, so it’s vital to support their successful transition to the workplace.”

The corporation was presented the award during the Texas Economic Development Council’s midyear conference in Plano. The Workforce Excellence Award recognizes exceptional contributions by a Texas community that has implemented successful workforce initiatives, according to the award application. Five awards were presented based on population. Bastrop received its award in the category for communities with a population of 15,000 or less.
