In an expanding role, Bastrop’s Bluebonnet Trails Community Services has added medical and dental services which are being offered to the surrounding community, including people who are “uninsured or under-insured.”

(Next door, Bluebonnet Trails Community Services continues its mission to provide care to those with intellectual and development disabilities, behavioral issues and also offers substance-abuse counseling.)

“We can now see anybody who comes to our door at the medical and dental clinic, even if they are uninsured,” said Henry Salas, Chief Executive Officer with Community Health Centers of South Central Texas – a private non-profit that has partnered with Bluebonnet Trails. But Salas emphasized the Bastrop Community Health Center is not free.

“This is not a free clinic – there is a sliding-fee scale with a minimum $25 contribution required,” Salas explained. However, even those having difficulty making that minimum payment all at once can set up a payment plan of $5 per payment.

Even though the added medical/dental facilities have been open about a year (February 2014), officials said they wanted to be sure to get the word out. “We want to let people know that we are here,” Salas said.

For medical care, the facility now offers physical examinations, immunizations, laboratory, obstetric services, nutrition education and a patient medication assistance program. From pediatrics to geriatric care, patients have access to quality care as well as chronic disease prevention, treatment and management. Mammograms and screenings for cervical cancer are among the services also provided for women.

Dental services include comprehensive examinations, cleanings, digital x-rays, fillings and a large range of preventative and restorative services. Services are offered at a discount for uninsured patients who qualify based on household size and income. Patricia Adesanya, who is a doctor of dental surgery and general dentistry, leads the dental department.

Physician’s assistant Jill Elliott and her two fulltime medical assistants compose the medical portion of the clinic. Elliott is overseen by physician/pediatrician Dr. Jane Wray, who is based in the Elgin office of Community Health Centers of South Central Texas. Dr. Wray is the overall medical director/supervisor of the Bastrop clinic. “Dr. Wray visits the Bastrop clinic at least once a week to meet and consult with Jill,” Salas added.

We are getting them back on the right track. And I also (treat) a lot of Bluebonnet’s clients.”

The Community Health Centers of South Central Texas has also seen recent financial assistance, which has directly benefitted the Bastrop facility. The centers received $695,000 from the St. David’s Foundation. And they were also recently awarded $293,000 by the Department of State Health Services for medical and dental services for its facilities in Bastrop, Caldwell, Gonzales, Guadalupe and Victoria counties.

The hours for the Bastrop medical/dental clinic at Bluebonnet Trails Community Services are: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Same day appointments are available and walk-in patients are welcome.
