A truffles’ surprise for Valentine’s Day

Visitors are in for a treat at Drusilla Rogers’ Sugar Shack

In need of an exquisite confection for your special person on Valentine’s Day? Drusilla Rogers, owner of Sugar Shack at 114 Loop 150 West, has a sweet solution for you.

Chocolate and happiness

“There are ingredients in chocolate that make people feel better – that’s a known fact,” Rogers said. Indeed, medical experts say chocolate, especially darker chocolate, increases serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain – the chemicals which fuel pleasant feelings. And it may also be helpful in rescuing one who’s had a fall from grace with a loved one, Rogers advised with a twinkle in her eye. “I’ll have men come in and say, ‘I’m in the doghouse and I need help.’ Sugar Shack is a great place for them to get out of the doghouse for Valentine’s Day,” she said.

‘Love’ truffles

Among the dozens of choices at a store packed with abundant goodies, chocolate truffles and chocolate-dipped strawberries are among favorite customer choices for Valentine’s Day, Rogers said. “We keep the chocolate warm all day for the fresh strawberries we buy locally and then dip them right here,” said Rogers, who will celebrate 23 years in business this year.

Rogers has over two dozen different fillings for the delectable truffles including amaretto, tiramisu and velvet cake. For a photo, she held up a tray of one of the best sellers – Valentine Fudge Love Truffles, with “love” scrolled across the top in white.

Rogers said the chocolate goodies make good gifts for men, too. “Men want to be made to feel special on Valentine’s Day, just like we do, so we have women buying for their sweetie,” Rogers said. Those treats can also be delivered in a decorative box.

Wait, there’s more!

Bring in your loved ones for ice cream shakes, floats, sundaes and smoothies with fetching names like strawberry passion, mango madness and lava flow. Children also love the oversized lollipops and stuffed animals.

Bastropian Kaitlynn Black, visiting on a recent weekday, said Sugar Shack is one of her favorite stops in Bastrop. “I really like all their homemade chocolate-covered items. I’ll probably treat myself to one of these right here,” Black motioned to a dozen of truffles behind their glass cases. The mouthwatering truffles seemed to be beckoning with whispers of, “Taste me now!”
