Helping businesses recover from disasters

How to rebound your business when disaster strikes will be the subject of a workshop on Sept. 28 at the Bastrop Convention Center.

“We want small business owners to have the tools they need to be prepared in case of a disaster; unfortunately disasters are a reality in today’s world,” said Bastrop Chamber of Commerce President Becki Womble.

The workshop, which is sponsored by the Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville chambers of commerce, will be particularly relevant for Bastrop County business owners because of the string of disasters which struck the area in recent years, including the devastating 2011 Bastrop County Complex Fires and severe flooding more recently.

The workshop is designed to equip small business owners with everything their business needs in case of a calamity, including their own draft emergency plan for recovery. Participants will also hear a panel discussion featuring small business owners who recovered from disasters. The keynote speaker will be former Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald, who helped guide the County’s recovery in the aftermath of the 2011 Complex Fires.

“We hope everyone will take advantage of this fantastic opportunity so we can lessen the burden disasters have on our business community,” Womble said. The event is open to attendees from all across the region. The “early bird” price for the workshop is $35, through Sept. 22; and $50 per person afterwards. The workshop is from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Convention Center, 1408 Chestnut St.
